In 2014, Georgia became the first state in the nation to offer a tax deduction to community based physicians who provided uncompensated training to our state’s medical students.
The PTIP website address contains eligibility requirements, FAQs, training opportunities, program guidelines, and news/ updates.
Under Senate Bill 391, Georgia physicians who provide clinical training to health professions students for a minimum of three (to a maximum of 10) rotations, and who are NOT compensated through any other source, can claim a tax deduction of $1,000 for every 160 hours of training provided. The tax deduction is intended to assist Georgia programs (MD, DO, NP and PA) with providing the community based educational resources needed to graduate students in primary care.
The Statewide Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program Office at Georgia Regents University shall administer the program and certify rotations. ONLY the AHEC Program Office can certify eligible rotations. Individual academic programs will report completed qualifying hours to the AHEC Program Office.
The deduction will be certified by the Georgia Statewide AHEC Network Program Office and a tax letter issued by January 30 of each calendar year.
